Maldives rout Bangladesh

Sports Reporter

Led by Julianus Maria Tom Saintfiet, the newly appointed Bangladesh national football team coaching staffs saw a woeful experience with a 5-0 devastating defeat in their first assignment against Maldives in a FIFA friendly  match on Thursday in Male.

It is the most embrassing defeat for Bangladesh national football team against the Maldives. Even the Belgian coach Saintfiet stated to the team management that it was  most disappointing result in his coaching career.
Bangladesh national team, who went Male to play their only preparation match, suffered the record margin defeat against Maldives just four days ahead of the Asian Cup pre-qualifying play offs against Bhutan.
Bangladesh team scheduled to return home today and will play their home match against Bhutan on September 6 and the away match in Bhutan on September 10
The result in the preparation match is very much alarming for the Saintfiet’s men, as the performance of his boys could not show any appositive approach, which would be something encouraging or inspire them before the Bhutan match.
In full 90 minutes time, besides some pressing attitude at the very early hour of the match with producing quick attack and also having two or three corners, Bangladesh could not show anything convincing or impressive, as they had to play under pressure in the  rest of the time.
Specially, Bangladesh could not produce any resistance against the hosts after a goalless first half’ rather they spent their most of the time at the receiving end and in the process they conceded five goals.
It is just one kind of revenge of Maldives against Bangladesh, when once the former used to suffer defeats to Bangladesh with big margin.
Bangladesh national team and also the club teams have happy memories of mid 80s to early 90s to win against Maldives by big margin.
Bangladesh national team won against Maldives by 5-0 in 1984 in Kathmandu, 8-0 in 1985 in the SAF Games in Dhaka and Mohammedan Sporting Club also won by same margin in the Asian Club Cup tournament against a Maldives club team.
At that period it was very much expected and easy to make prediction that Bangladesh would win against Maldives with bigger margin but for last few years Maldives became one of the powerful teams in the SAFF arena to whom every teams of this region tasted defeat to them.
But it is very much grief-stricken for Bangladesh to concede a humiliating defeat to Maldives very often when it started from mid 90s with a 3-0 defeat and recently they defeated Bangladesh by 3-1 in 2011 and by same margin in the last SAFF Championship in Kerala.
