Former West Indies legendary bowler Courtney Walsh is expected to arrive in Dhaka today to open a new chapter of his chequered crickteting career with coaching the Bangladesh national team.
After agreeing to a long-term deal with Bangladesh, the BCB appointed Walsh as the specialist bowling coach.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon, MP informed the media at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday.
“He is expected to arrive in Dhaka tomorrow (Saturday) night. I think he is a great addition to our pace bowling,” said Nazmul Hassan.
He is well-known as a mentor. As so far as I have information he is technically sound more than his coaching experience. He knows what will do (to fare well). Time will say that how much our boys would take from him,” Hassan said while he was faced newsmen after landing from Singapore.
Explaining the pre-contract situation, the BCB president said, “Basically, we were searching for a fast bowling coach and talked with three men. Courtney Walsh amongst them was our top preference though he has no experience of working with the national team.”
“But cricket legend like him was a rare in fast bowling. He has experience in coaching for West Indies U-19. Even he gave tips and taught bowling at different countries. He has still enormous interest in cricket. We have chosen him.”
“He also confirmed us but as the series between West Indies and India was going on. And so, he could not submit his resignation letter. For this, one more day has been delayed to announce him as the bowling coach,” he also said.
Walsh completed his assignment as a selector for the West Indies this month, a post he occupied for the last two years. As of now, he is raring to take up his new position in Bangladesh.
“I'm thrilled to be joining the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as their specialist bowling coach,” the 53-year-old told media in his reaction after penning the deal with Tigers.
Papon said that they have filled up some vacant posts that were required for the national team ahead of the upcoming series against Afghanistan and England.
“We have some shortage of coaches. For this, we have promoted our fielding coach Richard Halsall to the assistant coach for the next World Cup in 2019,” BCB boss said.
“We appointed Sri Lankan batting specialist Thilan Samaraweera as our batting consultant only for the upcoming England series. We will estimate later whether we will extend him or not,” he also said.
When asked about spin bowling coach, Nazmul said that they will appoint a quality spin bowling coach prior to the series against New Zealand.
“We have a vacant post of spin bowling coach. We are searching for a quality spin coach. Hopefully we could soon be got a spin coach,” he told in response to a query.
“We did not get such quality spin coach what we are looking for. But we will try to pick the best amongst the available coaches. It will be better if you appoint any of them,” he said, adding “It will not possible to appoint a spin bowling coach before the England series. We are seeking to appoint a quality spin coach before the New Zealand series.”
