Prices of major spices, especially ginger, garlic and cardamom, have witnessed a sharp rise in the different kitchen markets of the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated on September 13.

The prices of the spices have increased by Tk 30 to Tk 100 per kilogram. Consumers said they are unhappy about the price hike.  They alleged that the prices increased due to lack of monitoring.
Traders said annual demand of spices in the country and supply of different varieties is satisfactory. So, the prices of spices would not skyrocket this year.
They, however, said Price of cardamom, clove, black pepper, Joyfol, garlic and ginger rose as these items are selling at high rate in the international market. The high import cost attributed to the price hike of ginger and garlic, market insiders added.
The traders said   prices of onion, dry chili and tamarind remained unchanged due to the sufficient supplies in the market. The price of cinnamon saw decline, they added.
Abu Taleb, a businessman at the capital’s Kawran Bazar, said the prices of some of much needed spices during Eid rose over the past 15 days.  However, this year prices of the spicy items have not increased comparing to that of the previous years. “We have enough stock of spicy items to provide retail market,” he said.
"During the festival of Eid-ul-Azha, we usually see a sharp rise in prices of such essential spices due to heavy demand in the local market every year," he said.
Visiting Karwanbazaar wholesale market, it was seen that cardamom was being sold at Tk 1050-Tk 1500 depending on different varieties. The prices had been sold at Tk 900-1400 for long time.
Indian imported white cumin seed was being sold at Tk 315-320. Weeks ago the spice was sold at Tk 290. Best quality cumin seeds were being sold at Tk 360 per kg. Besides, price of Joyfol increased to Tk 470 from Tk 410. Local garlic is being sold at Tk 140-145 per kg against earlier prices of Tk 95-110 per kg.
Besides, Chinese garlic is also imported from Egypt and is priced at Tk 145-150 per kg.
Per kilogram of garlic was being sold at Tk 150 two days ago but now consumers are purchasing the item at Tk 170-185. White pepper (shada golmorich) was being sold at Tk 1,000-Tk 1,100, cinnamon was at Tk 350-400, clove at Tk 1,300-1,400, cassia leaf at Tk 230.
Wholesalers said that the supply of all varieties of spices is normal, so there can be no reason for the prices to rise.
The retailers on the other hand, allege the wholesalers formed a syndicate and raised the prices to make some extra profit ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
