At least 2,376 people died and 6,341 injured in 2,179 road accidents from January 1 to August 31 this year across the country, according to a survey of a non-government organisation the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways. As per the data, the country witnessed a decreased rate of road accidents and casualties in the ongoing year. The road accidents were decreased by 31 percent while the deaths by 49 percent and the injuries by 31 percent. The survey was conducted by NCPSSR General Secretary Ashis Kumar Dey based on reports published on 20 national dailies, eight online news portals and news services and 10 regional newspapers.
During the same period in the previous year, the country witnessed 4,622 deaths and 9,151 injuries in 3,162 incidents of road mishaps in the country, the survey says.
