Bangladeshi woman killed in US ‘hate crime’

A 60-year-old Bangladeshi woman was murdered while walking on a road in Queens in New York, USA, yesterday. The victim was identified as Nazma Khanam. The murder of the elderly woman comes within three weeks of the gunning down of two Bangladeshi nationals, including an imam, in the same borough. Investigators suspect that Nazma was a victim of hate crime as she was wearing a hijab when she was stabbed in the Jamaica Hills section of Queens. The idea of robbery was ruled out as nothing was taken from her. The attack took place around 9pm when Nazma was walking along 160-12 Normal Road after coming out of a superstore with her husband, Shamsul Alam Khan. Shamsul told police that he was a bit ahead of Nazma as she was walking slowly. He suddenly heard his wife scream and turned back to see her lying in a pool of blood.
She was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was declared dead. Nazma’s family members told The Independent over phone that Shamsul had not seen the assailant. The family said Nazma and Shamsul were living in Queens with their son. The couple have another son and daughter, who live in Dhaka. One of Nazma’s nephews, Kabir, is an officer with the New York police department (NYPD). The NYPD Muslim Officers Society tweeted about the incident: “Very sad to announce death of the aunt of our member PO Kabir #TD2 @NYPDTransit who was stabbed in @NYPD107Pct tonight. Let’s catch the perp.” On August 13, Alauddin Akonjee (55), the imam of Al-Furqan Jame Mosque in Ozone Park, and his associate Tara Uddin (64) were also killed in a hate crime.
