Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali left Dhaka for Singapore yesterday to attend the two-day Indian Ocean Conference 2016, reports UNB. India Foundation is organising the event began at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, said an official at the Foreign Ministry. Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS), Institute of Policy Studies, Sri Lanka and S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) Singapore are co-hosting the event. A delegation, led by the Foreign Minister, left for Singapore in the morning, said the official. The conference endeavours to convene critical states and principal maritime partners in the Indian Ocean Region to cogitate and deliberate on myriad issues impinging on region-wide national security and national development, through the tri-prism of geo-strategic, geo-economic and geo-cultural, rendering maritime affairs to not merely be a realm of concern for national security planners and the strategic establishment, but to connect with the broad swathe of popular opinion, discourse, consciousness and imagination, across IOR communities and societies, organisers said. Eminent leaders and delegates from over 15 countries in the Indian Ocean Region are attending the conference. From Singapore, the Foreign Minister will go to Oslo, Norway and will visit other Nordic countries, an official told UNB. The Nordic countries are generally considered to unambiguously refer to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, including their associated territories. The Foreign Minister is expected to return home on September 11.
