The Masters Cricket Carnival began amid the rain yesterday at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium (KICS). The persistent rain at one phase threatened to ruin the day’s proceeding but one game instead of two finally was held after the rain stopped for sometimes.
In the first game, Dhaka Metro crushed Rajshahi Renaissance by eight wickets to get off to a brilliant start to the Carnival, organised by the former cricketers. The match was reduced to eights overs.
Former national spinner Mohammad Rafique was the star of the day with one wicket and an unbeaten 8 ball-22 which gave his side the commanding victory. The Rajshahi Renaissance, opting to bat first, scored just 50 runs as Metro bowlers bowled in disciplined manner to strangle them. Rafiqul Islam was the highest scorer. Metro got a whirlwind star thanks to Moniruzzman who blasted 23 off 10. Rafique then struck unbeaten 22 to sail the side home as Metro sealed the deal within just 4.5 overs, losing two wickets.
