KHULNA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday said that government stressed the need for ICT based education for the new generation to face global challenge of 21st century, reports BSS.
“The government has attached its highest priority on education across the country to expedite the development process,” he said, adding that “Education is an important tool to boost development process in all sectors.” The minister was speaking as chief guest while inaugurating day-long programme celebrating the 13th founding anniversary of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).
He said, a total of 23,350 educational institutions have been brought under multimedia class room, 99 percent students are now going to school, 10 crore people use mobile phone and 5 crore people use internet.
The minister said, Bangladesh moves on the way to be digitized and middle income country by 2021. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dreamt of such success before the general election in 2008.
Earlier, Education Minister inaugurated the programme by hoisting national flag and releasing balloons and pigeons. Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammed Alamgir and convener of KUET 13th founding anniversary committee also Dean of Mechanical Engineering Department Prof Tarapada Bhoumik, spoke on the occasion. On this occasion, KUET organised elaborate programmes including colourful processions, discussion, innovative projects exhibition, technical papers presentation, inauguration ceremony of newly built dormitory, opening laboratories of different departments, charity football match, doa mahfil and cultural events where students, teachers and staff of the university took part.
A colourful procession led by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid marched the campus. The procession came to an end at the auditorium of KUET.
Addressing a view exchange meeting with teachers, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “The aim of the Liberation War is yet to be achieved.
He also said, “Teachers are the main force in the education sector. So, they (teachers) have to play a key role in imparting education.” Chaired by VC Prof Dr. Mohammed Alamgir, heads and deans of different departments, provost, proctor, among others, attended the programmes.
In 1967, the institution was established as Khulna Engineering College on 101 acres of land. Academic activities started on June 3 in 1974, with 120 students under three departments on the special direction of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
However, it was upgraded as Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT) in 1986 and then to Khulna University of Engineering & Technology on September 1, 2003.
