China joins the ranks of the world’s 25 most-innovative economies, while Switzerland, Sweden, the UK, the US and Finland lead the 2016 Global Innovation Index (GII). The rankings were released recently in Geneva, Switzerland.
The 2016, GII was jointly released by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The innovative capabilities and achievements of economies worldwide were assessed through 82 indicators. China ranks 25 on this year’s list, a four-place jump from last year.
WIPO Director General Gurry Francis said at a press conference that “China’s progression reflects the country’s improved innovation performance, as well as methodological considerations such as improved innovation metrics in the GII. This is consistent with the growth we see in China in recent years. In many industries, Chinese products and technology have emerged as globally competitive.”
In terms of the innovative quality of universities, scientific publications and international patent applications, Japan, the US, the UK and Germany ranked in the top four, while China ranked 17, thus remaining a leader of the middle-income economies.
Among the 82 indicators, China was ranked at the top often. These included the proportion of high-tech exports, knowledge workers, teenage reading levels, mathematic and scientific abilities, corporative training, among others. China also showed significant advances in global R&D investment, knowledge and technology output, intangible assets and other areas. However, it remains backward in terms of its regulatory environment, higher education, energy intensity, and other indicators. (Compiled from People’s Daily Overseas Edition)
