A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced three ‘top criminals’ to 21 years’ imprisonment in a case filed in connection with the recovery of huge arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifle, in 2011, UNB reports.
Judge of Chittagong Special Tribunal-7 and Joint Metropolitan Session’s Judge Mosammat Bilkis Akter delivered the verdict.
The convicts are Md Sarwar alias Babla, 29, Md Nurunnabi alias Maxon, 33, and Md Manik alias Gittu Manik, 29. All the three convicts are known as Islami Chhatra Shibir activists.
Among the trio, Manik was tried in absentia. According to case records, a team of Bayezid Bostami Police Station arrested Sarwar and Maxon from Bishwa Road Chourasta intersection in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila on July 4, 2011. Based on the information gleaned from the arrestees, police conducted a drive in Hamidpur area under the same police station and recovered huge arms and ammunition, including one AK -47 rifle, one foreign pistol, 30 bullets, one locally made gun, one locally made one-shooter gun and one locally made LG, from the bank of a pond behind the house of Manik. An arms case was filed against the trio in this connection.
