Altaf Mahmud remembered on 45th death anniversary

Noted martyred intellectual and music composer Altaf Mahmud, who earned huge popularity for his iconic song ‘Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February’, was remembered on his 45th death anniversary on August 30. To remember and pay respect to the legend in an appropriate manner, Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Foundation organised a commemorative programme followed by an award ceremony on Tuesday at the Liberation War Museum, Segun Bagicha in the capital.
This year, eminent writer-columnist Serajul Islam Choudhury was awarded with the prestigious ‘Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak 2016’for his outstanding contribution to literature. Altaf Mahmud’s wife Sara Ara Mahmud handed over the award to Serjaul Islam Choudhury at Tuesday’s event. A crest, uttorio and an amount of ten thousand taka were received by the award recipient.
Serajul Islam Choudhury said, “I never expected this award. I don’t even know whether I am eligible to get the award. But both of us, Altaf Mahmud and I, are the travellers of same road—this might be the reason.”
Born on June 23 in 1936, Serajul Islam Choudhury is a literary critic, public intellectual, social and political analyst, activist, historian, educationist, editor, translator, columnist, and professor emeritus at the University of Dhaka.
At the beginning of the programme, Altaf Mahmud was remembered through musical performance. The songs were performed by Sharmin Sathi Moyna. She began with a Nazrul song ‘Shunya E Buk Pakhi Mor Aay Firey Aay, while her second performance was ‘Dhonya Jobon Dhonya Tomar’ tuned by Altaf Mahmud.
Conducted by Shaon Mahmud, daughter of Altaf Mahmud, trustee board member of the Liberation War Museum Mafidul Haque delivered welcome speech at the event. Among others, Sara Ara Mahmud and treasurer of Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Foundation Shimul Yusuf spoke on the occasion.
To note, Altaf Mahmud (December 23, 1933– September, 1971) was a musician, cultural activist and martyred freedom fighter of the Bangladesh Liberation War. During a combing operation (on August 30, 1971) in Dhaka by the Pakistan army, Mahmud was arrested and believed to have been killed in September of that year.
