While they are not lucky enough to get to see national cricketers more often than not, the people of Cox’s Bazar at least get the chance to quench the thirsty heart, watching former stars, who contributed in cricket renaissance in Bangladesh, in live action.
Although the persistent rain threatens to ruin the game, the Masters Cricket Carnival (MCC), an initiative of the former cricketers rolls onto the ground today at the world’s longest sea beach, Cox’s Bazar. It’s a total fun cricket but competitive mood prevails amongst the former stars who played for Bangladesh once and enriched the country’s cricket.
Amid the fanfare, the goal of the tournament is great. It is organised in a bid to help the insolvent cricketers. The tournament is in experimental stage, given it’s the first such kind of initiative but the former cricketers have the plan to make it a grand tournament, involving the foreign stars like Sanath Jayasuriya, Wasim Akram, who played in Bangladesh at some point of their career. They also will raise a fund from which they will set a platform of assisting the cricket related persons, organisations and also picking up players from the grassroots level. Thereby they want to involve in country’s cricket development in some capacity.
The meet will be held on single league system, and Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium (SKICS) will host all the matches of the group phase and semifinals, whilst the final will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Each match will be an 18-over affair, apart from the semi-final and final which will be a 25-over affair. Only final among the matches will be a day-night affair to be live telecast by a private satellite television channel.
Sponsored by Walton powered by Scan Cement, a total of six teams, splitting into two groups, will take part in the franchise-based tournament. Participating teams are Lanka-bangla All Stars Masters, Ispahani Chittagong Masters, Jaj Bhuiyan Dhaka Division, Confidence Group Dhaka Metro, Gemcon Group Khulna Masters, Renaissance Rajshahi Masters.
Dhaka Metro, Rajshahi Masters and All Stars Masters have been drawn in the Group-A, whilst Group-B has been comprised of Chittagong Masters, Khulna Masters and Dhaka Division. Two matches will be held everyday.
Confidence Group Dhaka Metro will take on Renaissance Rajshahi Masters while Jai Bhuiyan Dhaka Division will face off Ispahani Chittagong Masters.
The six captains were present during a press conference in this regards yesterday at SKICS, vowing to make the tournament a success so that that they can set up a platform for the greater interest of the cricket.
“We want to start it and spread the cricket. Those who are now the current cricketers will become former and they will take over.”
