The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday granted bail to veteran journalist Shafik Rehman in a case filed for alleged attempt to abduct and murder Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Advocate M Asaduzzaman, one of the counsels for Shafik, told reporters that there was no legal bar for Shafik to get released from jail following the apex court order.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after hearing Shafik’s appeal seeking bail in the case.
The apex court granted bail to him for three months or until submission of the case’s charge sheet. If police submits the charge sheet before three months, his bail will be expired, according to the court order.
Earlier on June 7, the High Court rejected a bail petition of Shafik in this case.
Later, he filed the appeal with the SC challenging the HC judgement and sought bail in the case. Shafik was arrested on April 16 from his residence in Dhaka in connection with the case filed for the alleged attempt to abduct and murder of Sajib Wazed Joy.
