The police arrested the suspected killer of Suraiya Akter Risha from Nilphamari yesterday (Wednesday). Suraiya, a student of Willes Little School, was stabbed to death last week.
Police sources said a team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), along with the local police, picked up Obaidul Khan from a bazar at Sonahar in Domar upazila of Nilphamari district around 7:30am.
The DMP team, led by additional deputy commissioner (Ramna Zone) HM Azimul Haque, left for Dhaka around 12 noon yesterday. Obaidul would be produced before the court when he is brought to Dhaka.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Domar police station, Raziur Rahman, told The Independent that Obaidul went to Domar upazila on Tuesday to meet his brother-in-law, Khushbu, who is an office assistant of BRAC's Sonahar branch.
Obaidul phoned Khushbu when he did not find him at his office. Later, Khusbhu called his colleague, Shahadat, and asked him to stay with Obaidul for some time.
In the meantime, Khushbu called Birganj police to inform them about the location of Obaidul. The police then passed on the information to Domar police. Immediately, a team of the Dhaka Ramna police, including ADC (Ramna) Haque and OC Raziur Rahman, conducted a raid at Domar's BRAC office around 8:00pm on Tuesday, but failed to nab Obaidul.
However, the law-enforcers detained Shahadat and Khushbu in the office and took them to the police station. The police sent photos of Obaidul to different parts of Nilphamari.
When Obaidul entered Nilphamari town, local people held him at Sonahar bazar in the early hours of yesterday and handed him over to the police.
The police also said they released Obaidul’s sister and brother-in-law who were taken into police custody for interrogation. The superintendent of police of Nilphamari district, Jakir Hossain Khan, at a briefing in Nilphamari, said the DMP, local police and RAB took part in the operation to arrest Obaidul.
The DMP’s deputy commissioner (Ramna Zone) said Obaidul was arrested within 48 hours as promised. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police, in a status on its official Facebook page on Monday, had requested all to inform the police about the whereabouts of Obaidul.
Police sources said Suraiya, who was a class-VIII student of Willes Little Flower School, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 28, four days after she was stabbed allegedly by Obaidul, in front of her school at Kakrail in the capital.
When the news of her death spread, hundreds of students of the school staged a demonstration, demanding justice and the arrest of the killer within 48 hours. On Tuesday, the students threatened to launch a more intensive movement if Obaidul was not arrested by 1 September.
Suraiya’s mother Tania Hossain filed a case against Obaidul under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Ramna police station.
