The navy chief will lead a steering committee that will be working to free the rivers in the capital from pollution, encroachment. The committee will also take measures so that the navigability of the rivers can be increased.
The decisions came at a meeting of a taskforce formed to monitor and increase the navigability of the country’s rivers. Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan led the meeting at the secretariat yesterday.
Among others, Food Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, lawmaker Sanjida Khanam, Navy Chief Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed and Shipping Secretary Ashok Madhob Roy, attended the meeting.
The meeting also decided to free the rivers from pollution and encroachment in three phases—short, mid and long term.
According to surveys, nearly 4,500 tonnes of garbage and 22,000 litres of harmful tannery waste are dumped in the Buriganga River every day while 7,158 kilograms industrial wastes are dumped in the Turag River during the same period.
