The Met office asked the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Paira to raise the local cautionary signal no. 3 on Tuesday due to the formation of convection in the Bay of Bengal after the trough of a low pressure fizzled out.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay had been told to keep close to the coast and negotiate the sea cautiously, as the convection had turned the waters choppy, making navigation dangerous with squally winds over the Bay and adjoining coastal areas, Met office sources said yesterday.
Under its influence, rain is likely in the next three days in the north-eastern regions of Mymensingh, Sylhet and Dhaka Divisions.
Flood forecasting and warning centre (FFWC) sources, however, said the showers would not affect river conditions much.
The Padma, which threatened a wide swath of the northern and south-western regions, including Rajshahi, Kushtia, low-lying areas of the Kushtia, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Rajbari regions, put pressure on the Gorai and the Kobadak in south-western Jessore, with rising water levels flooding homes of thousands.
The Padma is receding and falling. Moreover, FFWC sources said yesterday that it would continue to fall in the next 24 hours, helping its offshoots Gorai and Kobadak to see a drop in levels. But the river has compounded the misery of flood-stricken people with heavy erosion slicing away large chunks of homesteads and cropland in Rajshahi, Faridpur, Shariatpur and Rajbari.
Erosion has severely mauled the town protection embankments at Rajshahi and Faridpur. Water Development Board officials and workers are battling to save the embankments, reports said.
The menace of erosion would continue as the river levels dropped further, the FFWC sources added.
The fast currents had severely affected ferry movement between Daulatdia and Paturia after two jetties were swept away in Daulatdia.
BIWTC sources said they had carried on the ferry services with efforts to repair the jetties.
