A luxury Mercedes-Benz car has been found lying abandoned in front of the Customs intelligence and investigation department (CIID) in Dhaka’s Kakrail area.
CIID officials recovered the car, costing about Tk 3 crore, last morning.
Department officials said they had found an open letter left in the car by its owner, without divulging the writer’s name.
The letter said: “Being respectful of the law, I have surrendered the car to the Customs intelligence and investigation department.”
The letter welcomed a CIID drive to seize illegal luxury cars. “I want to set an example by surrendering the illegal car so that other owners of such cars hand over their car to the Customs intelligence and investigation department,” the writer said without revealing his or her identity.
CIID director general Moinul Khan said that the owner of the Mercedes might have left the car in the wee hours of yesterday.
An examination showed it was a 2002 Mercedes-Benz-Model-230, having a 2,300 CC engine.
Moinul Khan said they were trying to identify the car owner. “We're assuming that the Mercedes-Benz was brought into the country through the carnet facilities. It was being used in violation of the rules and regulations stipulated by the government for importing luxury cars,” he added.
