Youth’s hanging body recovered

Police recovered the body of a youth hanging from a tree at Damukhali village in Abhaynagar upazila yesterday morning.
He was identified as Chandi Das Halder, 27, an inhabitant of Bhavanipur village in the upazila.
Sub-inspector Nasir of Abhaynagar Police Station said Chandi came out of his house at about 6.30 pm on Tuesday following quarrel with his wife and did not return home.
Local people of Damukhali found the hanging body in the morning and informed it to police. Police recovered the body at about 9 am.
OC of Abhaynagar police Anisur Rahman said Chandi claimed to be a local Juba League activist. A UD case was filed.

2 ‘criminals’ held with firearms

Laxmipur:  Police in separate drives arrested two alleged criminals along with one rifle, one light gun, three sharp weapons and five rounds of bullet from Bijoynagar and Purba Gopinathpur areas in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night, reports UNB.
The arrestees were identified as Rubel and Bahar Uddin.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Abdullah Al Mamun Bhuiyan said tipped off, two teams of Detective Branch of police and Sadar police station launched separate drives in Bijoynagar and Purba Gopinathpur areas and arrested the duo while they were staying there at night.
The law enforcers also recovered one rifle, one light gun, three sharp weapons and five rounds of bullet from their possession.
The duo was wanted in several cases including for robbery, extortion and murder, the OC added.

Two children drown
Our correspondent, Noakhali

Two children drowned as they fell in a pond at Mirwrishpur in Begumganj upazila of the district on Tuesday night.
The dead were identified as Yesmin Priyanti, 8, student of class one of Mir Alipur Darussuper Madrasah, and Sarika Yesmin Pranti, 3, daughters of Din Mohammad Sohag of Lalpur village.
Local union member Saleh Ahmed said they recovered the bodies from the pond with the help of fishing net at night. The girls fell in water in the afternoon while playing near the pond, he said. A pall of gloom descended on the village as the news of their deaths spread.

Road crash kills young man
HABIGANJ:  A youth was killed in a road accident at Kallyanpur village on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Bahubal upazila yesterday morning, reports BSS.
The deceased was identified as Ziaur Rahman, 25, son of Abul Kalam of the same area.
Police said the accident occurred when a goods-laden truck hit Ziaur in the area at about 10 am while he was crossing the road. He died on the spot.
Officer-in-charge of Shaestaganj highway police Zakir Hossain confirmed the incident.

Huge quantity of yaba seized
COX’SBAZAR: Members of the Coast Guard in a drive recovered 6,000 pieces of yaba tablet from Shahpori Island under Teknaf upazila of the district yesterday morning, reports BSS.
On a tip-off, a coast guard team conducted the drive in Jaliapara area at about 10.30 am and seized the contraband item, coast guard official said.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers the drug peddlers managed to flee away.

One held with shooter gun
MEHERPUR: Village people held a youth with a shooter gun and handed him over to police from Kamarkhali village in Gangni upazila on Tuesday, reports BSS.
The victim was identified as Saddam Hossein, 22, a resident of the village.
Locals said Saddam tried to open fire on one Kamal Hossein on Tuesday evening at Sindurkatha Bazaar of the upazila as he was involved in an altercation with his elder brother Faruque Hossein.
As he failed to open fire, local people held Saddam with the gun and handed him over to the Gangni Thana Police.
Confirming the incident, Officer in Charge of Gangni police Anowar Hossein said Saddam was sent to the court as he was accused of violating firearms laws.

T-Aman seedlings distributed
JAMALPUR:  Agriculture Department under a post- flood rehabilitation programme distributed Transplanted Aman seedlings among the farmers in Madarganj upazila yesterday, reports BSS.
Under the programme Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) disbursed T-Aman seeding of BR-23 variety, a late variety paddy, among 80 farmers in the upazila.
Director of DAE Choitany Kumar Das distributed the seedlings among the farmers as the chief guest.
The distribution progaramme held at Madarganj upazila parishad premises with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dr Kamruzzaman in the chair.

Unauthorised fertiliser factory fined at Meherpur    
MEHERPUR: A mobile court here fined an unauthorised fertiliser factory Tk 2.7 lakh on Tuesday evening, reports BSS.
On secret information, the mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Arif Hossain conducted a raid at Messrs Zaman Fertiliser factory in the town.
During the raid, the court found that the factory was manufacturing and marketing fertiliser without any license.
The court sealed off the factory and arrested its owner, manager and security guards on charges of violation of the related laws.
However, the arrested persons were released after payment of the fine on the spot.
