Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) looked unfazed by the mechanism of West Indies and Pakistan who apparently hatched a conspiracy to oust Bangladesh from the Champions Trophy, organising a tri-nation series involving Zimbabwe.
After consulting with the statistician unofficially about the ICC ranking, the BCB got the points that the Pakistan would have to perform extraordinarily well to pull off Bangladesh from the Champions Trophy in England.
Currently five and six points separated Bangladesh from the eighth ranked West Indies and ninth ranked Pakistan and so it would be tough for the latter to leapfrog Bangladesh. Pakistan in fact need to win all of the matches against Sri Lanka with whom they would play a five-match ODI series and in the tri-nation series. And at the same time if West Indies perform well, then it could only push Bangladesh to ninth position.
“I think that as per the current scenario, the chances for any other team to leapfrog us are very slim. Because we are ranked seven, we are hopeful of playing the trophy unless something big happens,” said BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowhdury Sujon.
The CEO pointed out the gap between Bangladesh and the other two sides which he thought made
the task very tough for Pakistan and West Indies to push Bangladesh to ninth position.
“You know that Pakistan and West Indies are ranked below us at the moment so matches between Pakistan and West Indies will have an effect on our ranking, but because the difference between rank 7 and 8 is around five points that’s why we think that chances are very slim,” he said.
Chowdhury however elaborated: “There is no such thing as a guarantee. The chances are very slim in the sense that Pakistan will have to win many matches because they are placed behind West Indies and so they will have to win many matches.”
“The thing is that the risk that we will have is that Pakistan will have to perform very well. We had sat down unofficially with statisticians, if Pakistan wins all the matches then there might be a situation where we will have to look at the points system.”
Chowdhury commented that they are in safe zone because they are playing against a high ranked team like South Africa and so according to the ranking predictor they would not loss many points in case of losing the series. But in the case of Pakistan and West Indies the ranking point wouldn’t be increased much even though they win because they are playing against below ranked team.
“The ranking system is complicated to predict but the easy calculation is that if you play with a lower ranked side, it will have less impact. Because Pakistan and West Indies are below us at the moment and the point variation isn’t much since it will depend on the team above you. We are playing against South Africa and we are in a safe zone because they are playing against a team that is below us,” he informed.
However Bangladesh earned a high praise from the ICC during the latest meeting because of their superb performance against Pakistan and India, said Nizamuddin Chowdhury. He also informed that some of the teams showed their interest to play against Bangladesh.
“They are really happy, ICC has congratulated us and you can see a future effect as well. We are discussing with some member countries regarding some other levels of cricket as well. We can develop relations from all levels,” he said.
“The FTP is very tight. When the main FTP was formed, our performance was as such that it wasn’t even approachable, we tried our best. But right now, even if it’s not in the FTP, we are working on the other levels like A team and academy level.”
Meanwhile, The tenure of the three-member selection panel was expired yesterday. The BCB however gave them the nod to continue their job until any decision is taken in BCB’s next meeting, said Nizamuddin Chowdhury.
“Selection panel will continue as it is, a decision will take place regarding them in the upcoming board meeting,” he said.
“There were several discussions in the board to see if they can increase junior selectors. But then again the decision will take place in the next board meeting.”
The BCB CEO also informed that the next Asia Cup with be T20 format but the no venue of the tournament is yet to be decided.
“In the ninth, ACC meeting, we discussed that the Asia Cup will take place in T20 format. No venue has been decided as yet.”
