Bangladesh will buy 600 single and double-decker buses and 500 trucks from India for strengthening the services of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) under the Indian $ 2 billion 2nd Line of Credit (LoC).
The BRTC will implement two projects by June 2018 titled ‘Procurement of double and single-decker AC and Non AC buses for BRTC’ involving Tk 580.87 crore and “Procurement of Truck for BRTC” at cost of Tk 217.35 crore.
Two projects will be tables at the meeting of Executive Committee for national Economic Council today.
Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting on the proposed projects was recently held with physical infrastructure division member of the Planning Commission Khorshed Alam Chowdhury in the chair.
According to the summary of the PEC the government will provide Tk 146.55 crore while the rest of Tk 434.32 crore will come from the Indian LoC for the procurement of double and single-decker AC and non AC buses for BRTC. Besides, Tk 58.95 crore will come from government exchequer and rest of Tk 358.40 crore from Indian LoC.
Under the proposed project, some 300 double-decker buses will be procured alongside procuring 100 single decker AC city buses, 100 single decker AC intercity buses and 100 single decker non-AC buses.
The summary also said it is essential to strengthen the mass transport in the capital to assuage public sufferings.
The BRTC had taken various initiatives in the past to raise the number of its passenger buses to meet the growing demand for public transport, but it could not cope with the demand for vehicles.
The PEC recommended to place before the ECNEC for approval two projects.
In March this year, the government signed an agreement with Indian EXIM Bank to receive $2 billion Indian Line of Credit against 14 development projects in the country’s various sectors.
Under the Indian 2nd LoC, 14 social and infrastructure development projects in power, railways, road, transportation, ICT, shipping, health and technical education sectors have been identified for implementation.
The fresh $ 2 billion LoC is the biggest credit line that India has so far extended to any country.
