Heavy rush for train tickets

The Eid-ul-Azha holidaymakers thronged the capital's Kamalapur railway station and stood in long queues to buy their tickets as the sale of advance train tickets began yesterday.
On the first day, advance tickets were sold in Kamalapur and Chittagong railway stations from 8am and continued till 4pm. After the crescent moon sighting Eid-ul-Azha might be observed on September 12 or 13.
The rail authorities sold tickets for September 7 yesterday. Tickets for September 8, 9, 10, and 11 will be sold on 30, 31 of this month and September 1, and 2, respectively, through special arrangements under the supervision of BR officials.
Besides, the return tickets for September 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 would be sold on September 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
During Eid holidays some 69 trains would leave Kamalapur railway station for different destinations. However, advance of just 31 trains having around 23,500 seats would be sold.
“I travel by train on every Eid. This time all arrangements ticket selling is better than previous Eid rushes. Coming at station at 6:00am I got the ticket at 9:00am,” a university student told The Independent.
Railway Director General Amzad Hossain said additional boggies would be added to some trains during Eid rush which would increase passengers carrying capacity by around 30 per cent. Railway Minister Mujibul Haque on Sunday declared the date of advance ticket selling at a press conference.
A passenger cannot purchase more than four tickets, and tickets, once sold, cannot be returned.
Security around the station has been tightened. Apart from the railway’s security unit police, GRP, RNB, BGB, and RAB personnel have been deployed to avert any unwanted incident and prevent the sale of tickets on the black market.
