Toxic toys

Toys are important for children’s physical and mental development but the same often appear hazardous

It is disturbing to note that different types of toys found in the market contain high concentration of toxic heavy metals which is dangerous for children, according to a report in this newspaper on Sunday. Health experts and doctors have sought to caution parents and guardians against toxic contamination in kids’ toys. Toys are important for children’s mental and physical development but the same often appear hazardous. Scores of kids are treated in hospitals for toy-related injuries while under the long term impact of contaminated toys, children’s growth could be hampered and body organs could be exposed to troubles.
A child’s exposure to poisonous chemicals like lead, cadmium, bromine, chromium and other elements can lead to many adverse effects. The poisonous impacts of toys could cause disorders like bone-softening, kidney problems, liver toxicity and estrogenic effects or cancer and hamper the kids’ learning abilities. Due to the frequent hand-to-mouth movement, the minor children easily swallow toxin contained in their toys. Besides, toys causing too much noise could be a reason for children’s hearing impairment, weakened immune system and sleep disturbance.
Due to absence of outdoor entertainment, extracurricular activities and lack of ideal parenting many children of affluent urban families are sequestered within the confines of their homes and they get little scope for social interaction. These children are getting addicted to video games and cartoon films. This is the age of information technology and access to internet has become a vital part of modern life. But too much of anything is bad, as goes the wise saying. Children of middle and upper middle class families are found as if glued to their seats these days for extraordinary long periods browsing internet.   This may cause psychological problems in them.
Many children keep awake at night due to internet browsing and smart phone practice. Inadequate sleep may cause problems for them. Cartoon films may expose minor children to violence. They need physical exercise along with brain work, otherwise they will be overstressed and bored. It is the responsibility of parents and guardians to properly guide them. Participation in different games and sports will provide them with proper physical fitness on the one hand and help growth of their mental faculty and confidence on the other. They must be aided, guided and urged by their elders and guardians to overcome their growing addiction to video games and cartoon films. The relevant authorities should take steps so that children are not exposed to things that may jeopardize their future.
