Under the digital system, the trial proceedings of top terrorists will be possible through video conference without their physical appearance in courts, said Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday. “The high officials of the police informed me that they have to bring the top terrorists in different districts in responding to the courts directive. But sometimes they were snatched from the police officials by their cohorts on the way to the courts. If the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina helps us, trial proceedings of such criminals can be carried out through video conference,” the chief justice said while addressing the agreement signing programme between the Supreme Court and the Access to Information (a2i) programme of the Prime Minister’s Office. The Supreme Court organized the programme at the Judges Lounge of the Supreme Court where Appellate Division and High Court Division judges, Chief Secretary of the Prime Minister Office, Access to Information project director and judicial officials were also present. In a written statement, the chief justice said that there was no alternative except reforming case management systems and developing information and technology in providing proper facilities to the litigants. He also said that under the digital system the litigants can see the latest status of their cases from their home and the people of the country can file cases from abroad, if they wish. The CJ, however, said that the initiative of digitalizing the judiciary is being hampered due to the lack of funding.
