Two people were sentenced to death in Mymensingh and Manikganj yesterday for killing wives for dowry. Our Mymensingh correspondent reports: A court in Mymensingh yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Sadar upazila in 2013. The convict is identified as Abdur Rezzak, 55, of Maizbari Panchmile area in Mymensingh Sadar upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 10,000.
According to the prosecution, Rezzak married Julekha Khatun, 40, some 22 years ago and the couple had nine children. Before six months of the murder, Rezzak demanded Tk 50,000 as dowry from Julekha’s family. As Julekha denied paying the money, Rezzak forced her to go to her father’s house. Later, Julekha’s parents and relatives persuaded Julekha to return to her husband’s house and she returned. Rezzak again put pressure on Julekha for dowry and as Julekha refused repeatedly, furious Rezzak stabbed her head with a sharp weapon, leaving her dead on the spot on March 14 in 2013.
Victim’s younger brother Azharul Islam filed a case accusing Rezzak with Kotwali Police Station the following day. Later, police submitted chargesheet against Rezzak.
After examining witnesses and evidences, Judge of Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Helal Uddin delivered the verdict.
Our Manikganj correspondent adds: A tribunal yesterday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife for dowry in 2005.
The condemned convict was identified as Anwar Hossain, 47, of Jamduara village in Shivalaya upazila of the district.
According to the prosecution, Asma Akter, 30, daughter of Abu Bakkar and wife of Anwar of Shivalaya upazila, was beaten to death by her husband over dowry on June 13, 2005.
Hanif Ali, brother of the victim, filed a case against five people, including Anwar. Later police submitted a chargesheet against four people on April 30, 2007.
After examining the records and witnesses, Manikganj Women and Child and Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Hasina Roushan pronounced the verdict and acquitted three others as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
