Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal is unlikely to play the ODI series against Afghanistan if it goes ahead as he fractured his finger during the practice session yesterday.
He was subsequently undergone an X-ray that revealed his left ring finger was injured while fielding at team practice.
According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury, it will take at least two to three weeks for Tamim to recover.
“He has fractured his ring finger during catching practice but it is not very serious. Good thing is that the fracture did not spread and is in one place. We are hopeful for him to recover within two to three weeks,” Chowdhury said.
Since Bangladesh is mulling a one-day international series in mid September against Afghanistan at home before England arrives for two Tests and three ODIs at the end of the same month, it looks improbable that Tamim could be part of that fixture. Dr Debashish Chowdhury though differed, saying that he is confident for Tamim to recover and be available for selection for both the series.
“But then again we also need to see how the fracture behaves, it varies from person to person. Tamim is a strong character and I am hopeful he will be fine before the matches,” said the BCB physician.
Tamim will not continue the skill training but the fitness training will go on carefully, said team physio Bayzidul Islam.
“After three weeks, we can judge him but so far it is sure that he is not going to miss the series against England,” Islam said.
Tamim has been the best batsman of the country ever since he made his international debut. While there were some ups and downs in his career, the swashbuckling opener flourished with full glory in the last three years and was pivotal in Bangladesh’s massive success in the last year. He in fact has been going through a best phase of his career which is why the injury disappointed the chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu.
“He has been our best batsman and it is of great disappointment of not getting him for a series. I still don’t know how many weeks he needs to recover fully but if he misses we need to have a replacement. We have nothing to do with the injury but we can just pray for his early recovery,” Nannu said.
The last time Tamim was out from the Bangladesh squad due to injury was during the Asia Cup 2014. The selectors than had Tamim, who was suffering from a neck strain, rested to have him available for the ICC World Twenty20 months later.
