Another blow to militancy

Another blow to militancy

The militants are definitely on the back foot as the law enforcers are on the ascendancy in the battle against extremist outfits. The police struck another decisive blow upon the local militant network by locating and killing the alleged  mastermind of the Gulshan attacks along with a couple of his accomplices at Narayanganj’s Paikpara on Saturday. Tipped off by reliable sources the police had engaged in an hour-long gun battle until the terrorists were shot dead.
The militants belonged to the banned group Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh, or JMB which is reportedly aligned with the vicious creed of the Islamic State or IS. The police, particularly their SWAT team, deserve plaudits for their well-coordinated raid and prompt timing for carrying out the successful assault.
Since the July 1 Gulshan cafe attack, a series of raids were carried out on suspected militant hideouts, resulting in the deaths of some 24 alleged extremists, but even so the alleged Bangladesh-born Canadian mastermind Tamim Chowdhury remained beyond the reaches of the police. However, the ongoing raids for curbing militancy from home grounds should not stop; on the contrary, it must now speed up with an added boost to the morale of our law enforcers. They have once again proved that commitment, sincerity and well timed actions can achieve results.
The government has taken a firm stance. The writ of the state must run. We cannot let Bangladesh become hostage to obscurantist elements. A concerted and sustained effort against all extremist groups operating in the country is necessary. Militants of all hues must be crushed.
Following the Narayanganj actions the police should now be able to fast break down the terror chain operated by militant organizations in Bangladesh. The Narayanganj success is also trailed by a-less-than-month old police shootout taking place in the capital where some nine extremists were killed. So the frequency of raids for locating terrorist hideouts has not only intensified but it is also yielding regular results. However, the law enforcers must concurrently ensure not to misuse their power. Moreover, they should also provide the people with accurate information.
Last but not least, as a nation we must all unite and show  zero tolerance to all acts of extremism and terrorism. Therefore, free Bangladesh of this ominous threat of violence aimed to attain evil political goals.
