Bangladesh are likely to play their first ODI matches since November 2015 with the maiden bilateral series against Afghanistan.
Although the dates of the matches are yet to be fixed, it is understood the three-match ODI series will be held in Dhaka ahead of the Bangladesh’s home series against England.
Sources said, the matches might be held on September 25, 27 and 29 as England are due to arrive in the country on September 30. With the terrorist attack in Bangladesh leaving England’s series in Bangladesh in uncertain state, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) started talking with Afghanistan to arrange a series in a bid to get the players back in cricket.
The uncertainty over the home series against England was removed but the series is seen to have a perfect match practice for the players ahead of the crucial series, considering they had never played ODI cricket since November last year when they hosted Zimbabwe. The possibility of the series gained the momentum when BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon gave the clue on Friday during a press conference.
Even though BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury remained tightlipped about who they are going to host, it is learnt head coach Chandika Hathurusingha briefed the players about the series during the practice session yesterday. “We are given an instruction about the series against Afghanistan,” a player said on condition of anonymity.
However later Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed that they are in talks with BCB in this regard. The ACB revealed the two boards yet haven’t decided on the number of matches and the dates.
“We are in talks with the BCB to play the series next month but we are yet to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” ACB media manager Aziz Gharwal told ESPNcricinfo. “We haven’t yet set dates for the matches but we will soon publish the dates on our website.” It is however also learnt that the BCB is in talks with one other team, apart from Afghanistan. Akram Khan, the chairman of BCB’s cricket operations, said: “We are still in talks with them but we cannot confirm anything at the moment.”
England’s tour of Bangladesh is scheduled to begin on October 7. Bangladesh have faced Afghanistan twice in ODIs with the result locked 1-1 and once in T20 internationals which Bangladesh won by nine wickets. The two teams met in the 50-over format during the 2014 Asia Cup – where Afghanistan won by 32 runs.
