RAJSHAHI: The regional office of Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) disbursed Taka 940.55 crore loan among poor people in the country's north-west region to help them generate their income through self-employment in agricultural and non-agricultural sector, reports BSS.
About 2.18 lakh people including 1.76 lakh women were brought under the credit scheme through forming 6,310 Bittahin Samabaya Samity, of which 5,115 for women.
BRDB is implementing the programme titled Rural Livelihood Project (RLP) as a follow-up of the Rural Poverty Cooperative Project (RPCP) in 49 upazilas in Rajshahi and 11 upazilas in Rangpur divisions since January 1999, according to official sources.
"The RLP project is being implemented to empower rural poor people, especially women, by building their capacity for income generation activities. Strengthening of the institutional capacities and skills of project beneficiaries are also among the major objectives," said Moktar Hossain, Regional Director of BRDB.
Necessary measures were also taken to create short and long-term employment opportunities for socioeconomic development, with intensifying participation of beneficiaries including women in planning and implementation, he said.
Dr Abdul Khaleque Khan, Deputy Managing Director of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, said investment in human resource development and other rural infrastructure improvement projects are contributing significantly to the rapid reduction in poverty especially in the country's north-west region.
