A total of $1,730.87 million in foreign direct investment, in different sectors, came from China during 2013-15, and generated 13,194 jobs, according to latest data from the Board of Investments (BOI).
On June 14, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said high-level officials from some of the major Chinese companies will visit Bangladesh soon, to explore investment opportunities in bigger projects.
The officials will include representatives of telecom, textile, infrastructure, and agro-processing companies.
While speaking on the outcome of his bilateral meeting with senior Chinese officials, the minister said he got very positive response from the Chinese authorities to proposals for investing in priority sectors in Bangladesh.
The priority sectors include agro-processing, agricultural tools and machinery, apparel, ICT, pharmaceuticals, leather and leather goods, light engineering, and jute and jute products.
During the period, 72 units across different sectors received FDI from China. Of them, one unit is agro-based, three units in food and allied, eight units in textiles, seven units in tannery and leather products, 16 units in chemical, one unit in glass and ceramics, 21 units in engineering, eight units in service sector, and seven units in miscellaneous sectors.
Inflow of FDI worth USD 1.33 million came in agro sector, USD 0.62 million in food and allied, USD 10.27 million in textile, USD 5.77 million in tannery and leather, USD 12.13 million in chemicals, USD 1.24 million glass and ceramics, USD 14.53 million in engineering, USD 1,681.48 million in services, while USD 3.46 million came in miscellaneous sectors.
In order to encourage FDI, Bangladesh government offers one of the most liberal investment policies and attractive packages of financial and other incentives, to foreign entrepreneurs, in South Asia.
