Burnley, Middlesbrough suffer shock exits

AFP

AFP, LONDON: Burnley suffered an embarrassing English Football League Cup exit against fourth tier Accrington, while Fulham also claimed a Premier League scalp with their second-round win over Middlesbrough on Wednesday.
Sean Dyche’s Burnley had enjoyed a surprise 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, but they were brought down to earth in a 1-0 loss against their unheralded Lancashire neighbours.
Accrington are currently 18th in League Two, but they proved stubborn opposition for Burnley and claimed a memorable victory when Matt Pearson swept home after a goalmouth scramble in the last minute of extra-time at the Wham stadium.
“The performance was decent enough but we didn’t take the chances we created,” Dyche said.
“Accrington take credit of course but we had a strong enough side out to win that.”
John Coleman’s team weren’t the only giant-killers of the evening as second-tier promotion chasers Fulham advanced to the third round with an impressive 2-1 win against Middlesbrough at Craven Cottage.
David Nugent glanced Middlesbrough into the lead with an eighth-minute header, but an own goal from Belgian midfielder Julien de Sart, deflecting in Scott Malone’s shot, gave Fulham an equaliser in the 54th minute.
Middlesbrough were unbeaten in their first two Premier League matches following last season’s promotion, yet Aitor Karanka’s side bowed out of the cup after Danish midfielder Lasse Vigen Christensen struck with seven minutes left in extra-time.
Adnan Januzaj’s maiden goal for Sunderland secured the first win of David Moyes’ reign as the Premier League side beat third tier Shrewsbury 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Shrewsbury inflicted one of the most embarrassing defeats of David Moyes’ career in the 2003 FA Cup when the Sunderland boss was in charge at Everton.
Having overseen two consecutive defeats since succeeding Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light, former Manchester United boss Moyes had to wait until the 83rd minute before he could relax as Shrewsbury, 20th in League One, frustrated Sunderland.
The breakthrough was provided by on-loan Manchester United forward Januzaj, who struck with a fine finish from 20 yards.
Marc Wilson’s first goal for almost six years clinched Bournemouth’s 2-1 victory over fourth-tier leaders Morecambe at the Globe Arena.
Eddie Howe’s team are bottom of the Premier League after successive defeats against Manchester United and West Ham and, after making 10 changes, it took Wilson’s unlikely heroics to ensure they earned a first win of the season.
Bournemouth winger Max Gradel opened the scoring with a low drive that cannoned in off the far post in the eighth minute.
Morecambe drew level six minutes later when Cole Stockton pounded on Brad Smith’s weak header and fired home.
But Republic of Ireland defender Wilson, making his debut after signing from Stoke, put Bournemouth back ahead in the 54th minute with a fierce low strike from 25 yards.
It was Wilson’s first goal since he netted for Stoke at Blackburn in December 2010.
