Six held with tiger skin
Detectives in a drive arrested six people along with a tiger skin foiling a bid to smuggle it out at Chakratala village in Khulna on Wednesday night.
The arrestees were identified as Abul Kalam, 44, Sohrab, 42, Abdur Rab, 63, Jamal, 33, Masum Billah, 29, and Golam Rabbani, 24, all residents of Koyra upazila. Tipped off, a team of DB police raided the house of Abul Kalam and recovered the tiger skin and arrested six people around 8.00pm, said Akkas Ali, officer-in-charge of Khulna Detective Branch. The market value of the tiger skin would be Tk18-20 lakh, he added.
Man hacked dead in Gazipur
A man was hacked to death by some unidentified miscreants at Gobindapur in Kashempur area of Gazipur city on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Shahin, son of Geduraj alias Juboraj, a resident of Sripur area in Ashulia. Chakrabarty police camp in-charge Sub-inspector Harun-or-Rashid said a gang of miscreants attacked Shahin when he was returning home at about 9:30pm. The attackers then stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him dead on the spot. Informed, police recovered the body.
One crushed under train
An unidentified man was crushed to death under the wheels of a train at Shibbari Joinapur in Sylhet on Wednesday night.
Local sources said the man died on the spot as a Sylhet-bound ‘Paharika Express’ train hit him while he was crossing the rail track at about 8:30pm. Informed, GRP police recovered the body.
Seminar on biosafety ends
A two-day international seminar and training workshop on “Biosafety, Biosecurity, Bioterrorism and Biodefence” concluded in the capital on Wednesday, said a press release.
Biosafety Office, icddr,b, Bangladesh country Office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Atlanta, Biosecurity Engagement Programme (BEP) of the United States Department of States, and Bangladesh Biosafety and Biosecurity Association (BBBA) in collaboration with Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) organised the seminar at Dhaka Cantonment.
CS holders briefed at UGC
British Council Bangladesh on Wednesday organised a briefing for the Commonwealth Scholarship (CS) holders on their pre-departure to United Kingdom (UK) at the University Grant Commission (UGC) auditorium in the capital, said an UGC press release.
UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan briefed the scholarship holders. Terming the Bangladeshi teachers and students, who have been awarded Commonwealth Scholarship as precious assets of the country, UGC Chairman urged them to utilise their talents in nation building activities in Bangladesh after returning from UK at the end of higher study there.
Two drug ‘traders’ arrested
Police arrested two drug-traders with 571 bottles of phensidyl from a village in the district WEdnesday night, police sources said in Rajshahi yesterday.
The arrested persons were identified as Babul Akhter, 32, and Delwar Hossain, 35. On a tip-off, a patrol team of police conducted a raid in the area at around 11.30 pm and arrested them with the phensidyl bottles. A case was recorded with the concerned police station in this connection.
Nat’l Productivity Day Oct 2
The National Productivity Day will be observed on October 2 in the country aiming to create mass awareness to raise productivity in different sectors including industrial, agriculture and service sectors. This decision was taken in an inter-ministerial meeting held at the conference room of the Ministries of Industries with its senior secretary Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan in the chair.
