Hundreds of workers of a readymade garments factory in Gazipur city staged demonstration and blocked roads protesting the shutdown of factory without paying salary for three months and allowance yesterday.
Gazipur industrial police and workers sources said, the authority of Hunywell Garments Limited at Konabari Ambag area of the city suddenly closed the factory on August 1 without any previous notice and paying the salary for three months (June, July and August), Eid bonus and due allowances.
Since then, about six hundred of the factory workers had been demonstrating in front of the factory every day demanding arrears. The factory authority then assured to the workers to pay their arrears very soon, but even after the month, they yet to pay arrears. Recently, they fixed Thursday to pay salary, but any officials of the factory or concerned any one came to the spot. The workers came to the factory premises on Thursday morning and staged demonstration . At one stage, they put barricade on Konabari-Ambag road demanding immediate payment of their arrears.
Inspector of Gazipur industrial police Abdul Khalek said, the authority did not pay salary and bonus during the last Ramadan and Eid.
Workers said, we will take job at another factory if the authority pay arrears. They said, our protest programme will continue until the arrears are paid.
