KHULNA: Leaders of Khulna Awami League yesterday demanded fresh investigations into the 2003 murder of party leader Advocate Manjurul Imam coinciding with his 13th death anniversary, reports BSS.
Unidentified assailants shot the party’s city unit president dead 13 years ago while the all accused were freed in subsequent trial when the judge said they were acquitted because of “flawed and weak” police investigations.
The demand for the fresh investigations and trial came after leaders and activists staged a protest march and rally in the city to mark the anniversary after placing wreaths and offering prayers at his grave.
The assailants had intercepted Imam, as he was on his way to the court, on August 25, 2003, and shot him dead along with a fellow lawyer and a rickshaw puller on the street when they also exploded homemade bombs to scare the people in the neighbourhood.
Advocate Bijon Bihari Mondal and rickshaw puller Saiful Islam Akon were also died instantly on the spot along with Imam.
Presidents and general secretaries of city and district unit Awami League (AL) Talukder Abdul Khaleque, MP, Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid, Mizanur Rahman Mizan, MP, and Mostofa Rashidi Suja, MP joined the procession and spoke at the rally.7
