23kg gold seized at Dhaka airport

A young man along with 23 kg gold, worth 11 crore, was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital by customs officials on Wednesday night. Md Ataul Majid, 32, the arrestee, a passenger of Singapore Airlines. His home district is in Saidpur.  

Ataul landed the airport on the SQ446 flight of Singapore Airlines at 10:30pm. He was challenged while crossing the green channel at the airport in a wheelchair.  The flight of Singapore Airlines landed at the airport around 10:30pm.
Dhaka Customs House assistant commissioner MH Ehsanul Kabir said, being tipped off, custom officials searched Majid's body and recovered 225 gold bars and some ornaments weighing 25kg hidden inside a pain killer belt. Estimated value of the gold bars is around Tk 11.50 crore, said Kabir.
Earlier on January 19 this year a customs preventive team seized 12kg of gold from a flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital, reports UNB.
Two people were also arrested in this connection.
Tipped off that several gold bars were concealed in the flight coming from Bangkok, a team of customs officials conducted a search at the aircraft around 6:30pm, said Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Customs Shahiduzzaman Sarkar.
