I got to know Anura, general manager of the Chinese branch of Sri Lanka’s Imperial Tea Exports (Pvt) Ltd., at an international tea fair recently held in Kunming. The company’s booth was impressively decorated with Sri Lankan elements, and the mellow aroma of tea filled the air and attracted a constant flow of visitors.
Anura warmly greeted visitors at the booth. He was strongly built and energetic. To my surprise, he also spoke fluent Chinese. He attributed his good health to his habit of drinking tea and said he fell in love with tea in 2001 and began to study it two years later.According to Anura, Imperial Tea Exports (Pvt) Ltd. was founded in 1994. Five years ago, the company expanded its business from Sri Lanka to China. Today, the Chinese market has begun to accept Ceylon tea, which sells well both on and offline. Also, the Sri Lanka Tea Board has recognised the company as “a leader of Ceylon tea in the Chinese market.”
Over the past few years, the quality of Ceylon tea has won recognition of Chinese consumers, said Anura.
Anura has participated in several international tea fairs in Yunnan. He knew Yunnan, home to and producer of the world’s best large-leafed tea. He also knew Pu’er tea produced in Yunnan already enjoys a good market share in China. However, he said it would not prevent high-quality Ceylon tea from entering the Chinese market, because as the tea market continues to mature, more people will begin to drink different types of tea.
Anura has been living in China for 20 years. Once he won the national martial arts championship in Sri Lanka, and he is well versed in Chinese martial arts. Additionally, he learned cross-talking from the famous Chinese cross-talker Ding Guangquan and has been granted many related honours in both Sri Lanka and China.
Anura is a “Chinese person” from Sri Lanka in the eyes of his employees. A lover of Chinese culture and history, he has long regarded China as his second homeland.
