A man killed three people, including his sister-in-law and her daughter, and injured his nephew at Birsingha village in Habiganj’s Madhabpur upazila on Tuesday over a land-related dispute, report agencies.
The deceased were identified as Jahanara, 40, wife of Saudi expatriate Giasuddin, their daughter Sharmin, 25, and Shimul, 27, a neighbour, while the injured is Sujat Miah, 12, son of Jahanara and a student of Class-VI of local high school.
Police quoting local people said Giasuddin, now in Saudi, had long been at loggerheads with his brother Taher Miah over the ownership of a piece of land. Taher engaged in an altercation with the family members of Giasuddin around 9:15pm over the issue, said assistant police super of the district (South) Raselur Rahman.
At one stage, Taher stormed the house of Giasuddin and slit the throats of Jahanara and her daughter Sharmin with a sharp weapon, killing the former on the spot.
As neighbour Shimul tried to prevent him, Taher also stabbed him with the weapon, leaving him injured. He also hacked Jahanara’s son Sujat during the attack.
Locals rushed in and took the injured — Sharmin, Shimul and Sujat — to Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared former two dead.
Meanwhile, locals caught Taher and handed him over to police.
