To fulfill the peoples’ demand for electricity, the government is ready to add an additional 150 MW power to the national grid to reach the total capacity up to 15,131 MW by October this year, reports BSS.
The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is to celebrate the electricity installation capacity of 15,000 MW during the power and energy week in November this year.
“Fortunately, the 15,000 MW capacity will be exceeded by more 131 MW by then,” Director General of the Power Cell Engr Mohammad Hossain told the news agency in the capital yesterday.
He said presently the power installation capacity reached up to more than 14,500 MW with the country’s 76 per cent people already having their access to electricity. This has been possible only due to the bold and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said.
Engr Hossain said the government has augmented generation of power, expanded transmission lines, distribution lines and improved capacity of other sectors to further raise the economic growth up to Bangladesh’s becoming a middle income country by 2021.
According to the details of power sector, Shikalbaha 225 MW Duel Fuel Combined Cycle Power Plant is set to go for commercial operation with already its test going on.
An official of the power plant said Shikalbaha plant is ready to supply 150 MW power from the simple cycle unit if the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited evacuates electricity to the national grid. “We have done almost 95 per cent installation work of the plant,” he added.
According to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the highest generation of power was recorded at 9,036 MW on June 30 this year, breaking all previous records in a single day. Earlier, the maximum electricity generation was 8,348 MW on June 16, 2016, while 8,348 MW on April 9, 2016, 8,032 MW on July 7, 2015, 7,923 MW on July 1, 2015, 7,418 MW on July 18, 2014 and 6,675 MW on July 12, 2013.
