President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday underscored the need for social afforestation for the country’s socio-economic development, reports UNB.
“Social afforestation, created with people’s participation, is playing a significant role in the country’s economic progress that is socio-economic development of rural people as well as creating jobs,” he said.
The president said this while addressing a tree plantation programme on Bangabhaban premises as part of the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair 2016.
Abdul Hamid also planted a sapling of Amlaki (Indian gooseberry) on the Bangabhaban premises.
Hamid said social afforestation on one hand is making many families self-reliant and creating forest resources on the other. That is why tree plantation campaign has to be taken forward further through social afforestation, he said.
“All must plant more and more trees across the country and our beloved Bangladesh will be full of greeneries only then,” the president said. He went saying, “Now it is monsoon. It’s the right time to plant trees. I urge all to participate in the three-month long plantation campaign and make the country full of greeneries.” President Hamid observed that forest resource is being decreased for various reasons, including unplanned urbanization and extension of factories.
“To recover from the situation, massive forestation and spontaneous public participation is needed,” he said.
Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossanin Manju, Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, Deputy Minister for Environment and Forest Abdullah Al Islam Jacob, among others, addressed the programme.
