Masters Cricket Carnival (MCC), a first initiative by ex-cricketers, will get underway on September 1.
The first slot of the tournament will be held at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar on September 1-3 and the second slot will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) on September 5 or 6.
Former captain Akram Khan, one of the coordinators of the carnival, stated this at a press conference at the BCB Media Block of the SBNCS yesterday.
The meet will evolve on single league system, in where SKICS will host all the matches of the group phase and semifinals, whilst the final will be played at the SBNCS.
Each match will be a 25-over affair. Only final among the matches will be a day-night affair to be live telecast by a private satellite television channel.
Sponsored by Walton powered by Scan Cement, a total of six teams, splitting into two groups, will take part in the franchise-based tournament. Participating teams are Lanka-bangla All Stars Masters, Ispahani Chittagong Masters, Jaj Bhuiyan Dhaka Division, Confidence Group Dhaka Metro, Gemcon Group Khulna Masters, Renaissance Rajshahi Masters.
Dhaka Metro, Rajshahi Masters and All Stars Masters have been drawn in the Group-A, whilst Group-B has been comprised of Chittagong Masters, Khulna Masters and Dhaka Division.
“We have seen some of our senior players, who could not afford the expenditure of the treatment because of their financial insolvency. We want to bring all the former cricketers under one umbrella and raise a fund so that we could spend it in the time of need for the welfare of the insolvent cricketers,” said Khaled Mahmud Sujon.
“Such type of initiative is the first in the country. We will take the necessary steps to stage the tournament every year,” Sujon also said at the presser.
When asked about some players, who have not included in the final list, the former captain said, “We have informed every player and asked to respond if interested within the timeline. Unfortunately we could not enlist some of our players after the deadline is over.”
The players draft for the carnival in a bid to form the teams was held earlier on the day at the SBNCS.
Former captain Khaled Mashud Pilot along with Syed Abu Abed Saher, head of sales and marketing of Scan Cement, ASM Zahid Hasan, Executive Director of Walton (Policy & HRM) and Uday Hakim, Operative Director of Walton (Creative & Publication) were also present.
The organizers also formed some committees including technical committee led by Rokibul Hassan, tournament committee led by Selim Shahed, logistic committee led by Azam Iqbal, media committee led by Habibul Bashar, facilities committee by Hasanuzzaman Khan Jhuru to run the meet successfully.
Players, who participated in the Dhaka Premier League for at least 5 years, will be eligible for the player draft. Former national cricket team members or ‘A’ team players will be entered automatically.
