Teachers and students of Dhaka University yesterday observed August 23 as 'Black Day' in memory of the 'inhuman, sad and condemnable' attack on the university's teachers, students and officials on August 20-23, 2007, during the military-backed caretaker government rule. With a demand to punish the culprits, DU students and teachers wore black badges and held different programmes, including a discussion and a human chain, on the campus. DU family (students, teachers, officials) was seen wearing black badges to commemorate the day.
A discussion was held in the TSC auditorium in the morning with DU Vice- chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique in the chair.
Addressing the discussion, praising the then activities of DU teachers and students Dr Arefin Siddique said that Dhaka University have played a leading role on that crucial time the country was going through in 2007. He also demanded exemplary punishment against those who were involved in this incident. “If the guilty people are put on trial, nobody will dare to cause such incidents in the future,” he said.
Among others DU pro vice chancellor (education) Prof Nasreen Ahmed, Dr Aktaruzzaman ( administration), DU treasurer Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, DUTA president Prof Fariduddin Ahmed, secretary Dr ASM Maksud kamal , two student who were tortured then and officials of Du were present there.
Earlier, a protest programme was held on DU Aparajeyo Bangla premises where among others professors Anwar Hossain who was arrested then urged government to ensure punishment to those who involved with such kind of evil deeds.
On August 20, 2007, army personnel beat three DU students and insulted a teacher on the DU gymnasium playground during a football match. The incident sparked clashes between police and students, spreading from DU to all other educational institutions in the country. Two DU professors Anwar Hossain and Harun-or-Rashid were arrested on August 23, 2007.
Later, then DUTA president Prof Sadrul Amin and Prof Neem Chandra Bhowmick and a number of students were also arrested following the incident.
