Students of Jagannath University (JnU) will announce fresh programmes today afternoon if their demand for constructing residential halls for them on the empty land of Dhaka’s old central jail is not met by then, reports UNB.
Rashedul Hasan, a 4th year student of the university, said this while talking to UNB on the 1st day of their two-day strike on the campus on Tuesday.
The JnU students enforced the fresh two-day strike at the university from Tuesday morning to press for their demand. Raisul Islam Nayan, a leader of the movement, had announced the strike at a press conference held on the campus on Monday noon.
The students took position from the university’s main gate up to Ray Saheb Bazar intersection at 8:30 am. They also staged demonstrations there by torching tyres.
The students’ demand for residential halls on the land of vacated Dhaka jail came as their accommodation problems took a deepening trend with landlords’ unwillingness to rent out houses to bachelors in the wake of militancy rise in the country.
The JnU students embarked on the movement for dormitories on the land of Dhaka Central Jail on August 2 after the transfer of its total setup to the newly built jail facility in Keraniganj last month.
JnU Correspondent adds: Earlier at around 7:30am, they assembled on the campus and soon after they started locking university’s main entrance, the entrances of all academic buildings including administration, in which the offices of Vice-chancellor, treasurer and proctor are positioned.
Meanwhile, no classes and exams were held on the campus as even the buses of the teachers were not allowed to entre the campus.
