Bagerhat: Incessant rains in the district have washed away around 56,000 fish enclosures, causing a loss of about ‘Tk 300 crore’ to fish farmers, reports UNB.
Low-lying areas in Sadar, Kachua, Mongla, Morelganj, Rampal and Sarankhola upazilas of the district went under water after nonstop rains over the last couple of days damaging crops on about 8,500 hectares of land,
officials at fisheries and agriculture departments said.
“Most of the fish enclosures in the nine upazilas were washed away, while aman seedbed and vegetable land were damaged by the rainwater,” deputy commissioner of the district Md Jahangir Alam said. He said several thousand people got marooned in a number of upzilas, while over 200 earthen houses damaged by the floodwater.
“It has been raining since Sunday last. And rainwater washed away fishes from 56,000 enclosures out of 71,000,” said Bagerhat district fisheries officer Md Abdul Wadud.
He said upazila fisheries officers were asked to prepare a list of fish farmers who suffered losses by the rainwater.
Deputy director of Bagerhat Zila Agriculture Extension Aftab Uddin said a total 119 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours since Sunday, leaving some 8,500 hectares of agricultural land inundated.
About 6,000 hectares of planted aman, 650 hectares of aman seedbed and 262 hectares of aush seedbed were affected due to rainwater, he added.
Our Narail correspondent adds: Torrential rain submerged different parts of Narail district town yesterday.
Several thousand people in low lying areas of Narail have been marooned as those areas went under water. Water entered houses and submerged hundreds of acres of farmland.
The rainfall started around 5:00am and continued till afternoon.
Active monsoon was causing torrential rain across the country.
Lowland areas are now under water as the area has seen unusual rainfall during the last few days, said Fasiar Rahman, 48, of Fulshar village in Sadar Upazila.
“I cultivate T-aman on my two bighas of land, but all these have washed away,” he said. Paddy growers are worried as most of the paddy fields were submerged by heavy rains.
