Bangladesh has a chance to welcome Rio Olympic gold medalist Margarita Mamun as his Bangladeshi father Abdullah Al Mamun had gladly accepted an invitation of State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam to visit Bangladesh.

“Mamun told me that he would definitely bring his ‘golden girl’ to Bangladesh sometime after the 2016 Olympic Games,” Shahriar Alam told The Independent over telephone yesterday. The meeting between Shahriar and Mamun took place during the state minister’s official Moscow visit last year.
“You see, the daughter of my friend from my home district has achieved such a feat! I am really very happy and proud for her,” a beaming Shahriar was heard as saying over phone.
Like the state minister, Margarita’s father Mamun also hails from Rajshahi.
“No I didn’t talk to his father or with her after the Rio Olympic success. However, I had an opportunity to meet her while visiting Moscow last year. During that period she was busy with her preparation with the Rio Games after her grand success in the European Championship,” said Shahriar, also the president of Bangladesh Tennis Federation, who presented her a bouquet and congratulated her for the European success.  He also recalled the dinner that he had hosted to celebrate her glory in the European championship.
“She has bagged four gold and five silver medals so far in the European Championship. She also showed her mettle in the World Championship winning seven gold and six silver medals, which ultimately paved her way to claim the No 1 spot in world rhythmic gymnastics,” Shahriar said.
Twenty-year-old Margarita, after winning the Olympic gold, told the media that the win was really expected to her.
“It was quite unexpected for me to win the gold medal today because before today Yana beat me and win each time in the all-round. So, I wasn't really thinking about winning the gold medal today,” said Margarita, who earned Russia a fifth successive gold in rhythmic gymnastics. She was also delighted that her victory was also being celebrated in her father’s homeland. She had represented Bangladesh as a junior.
“I'm really happy knowing that I have a lot of fans in Bangladesh who have been supporting me,” Margarita said in Russian adding, “I can count one to 10 in Bengali. When I was younger, my dad used to teach me Bengali but I have forgotten it all.”
Asked why did she choose to represent Bangladesh as a junior considering she was born and raised in her mother's homeland, Margarita said, “I had dual citizenship so that's why I decided to represent Bangladesh in a competition as a junior. I came back to represent Russia as I always lived and trained here.”
