DEMANDING FOR DORMITORIES

35 hurt as police foil JnU students’ march

Two-day strike called from today
JnU Correspondent

At least 35 students of Jagannath University (JnU) were injured as police fired teargas shell and rubber bullets to foil a procession in Bangshal area of old Dhaka yesterday.

JnU students brought out a procession to press home their demand for residential halls on the land of Dhaka's old central jail and then marched towards the Prime Minister Office (PMO) at 9:20am for submitting a memorandum.
Police obstructed them by laying barricade while the procession was passing through the Bangshal area around 10pm.  When the students tried to break the police barricade, police fired tear shells, rubber bullets and used water cannon that left at least 35 students injured. Among the injured, two were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition and others were in nearby hospitals.
However, students at a press conference announced a two-day more strike on the campus from today protesting the police attack. Following the procession, the protesters staged a sit-in programme at Tanti Bazar intersection and blocked the roads with chanting slogans in support of their demands. Vehicular movement for more than four hours came to halt from Sadarghat to Gulistan area owing to the demonstration.
Additional police forces were deployed on the campus to prevent further untoward situation.  The students said that the university authorities failed to arrange any dormitory for the students since the inception of the university. Students said they were marching towards the Prime Ministers office peacefully to press home their demand but police obstructed them.
