A 13-day special group art exhibition, titled 'Art Against Terrorism-BRAVE HEART', began at Gallery Cosmos in the city on Friday, marking the National Mourning Day, reports UNB. The reason for the hyphenation in the title is the twin--theme to this year's August exhibition at Gallery Cosmos. Usually, in keeping with the time of the year, it commemorates the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This year, to reflect the changing reality, it was felt a strong message against terrorism and militancy on behalf of the country's artists should be included, especially after the July 1 terrorist attack in Gulshan. Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated the exhibition as the chief guest. He also launched the exclusive book bearing the same title as the art exhibition containing imprints of artworks on Bangabandhu by 78 artists on the occasion. Out of which 50 are on display in the exhibition.
In his speech, the minister lamented that no strong reaction came from the intellectuals although a string of militant attacks were carried out in the country. In his opening address, Amanullah Khan, Chairman of Cosmos Group who is also UNB Chairman, said, “Rejecting the classical idea of ‘Art is for art’s sake only’ emphasised, Gallery Cosmos is sustained by the belief that art in essence constitute a force for good. Art operates as a powerful tool for social change by shaping, influencing and moderating human attitude, mindset and behaviour.”
“At a time when many parts of the world are being rocked by a series of militant threats and attacks that shook Bangladesh to its foundation at its nascent state with the cruel murder of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, Bangladesh obviously cannot remain immune to it, he said adding that the militancy has started raising its ugly head reaching its climax with the July 1 carnage that took place in the heart of the diplomatic enclave at a café
in Dhaka.
South Korean Ambassador in Dhaka Ahn Seong-doo, Cosmos Group Managing Director Enayetullah Khan, sculptor Ferdousi Priyabhashini and Artist Samarjit Roy Choudhury also spoke on the occasion.
Ambassador Ahn said, "I think it's very timely for Cosmos Gallery to hold this very important exhibition."
Noting that the exhibition has been dedicated to Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Enayetullah Khan said Gallery Cosmos is organising a special group art exhibition of contemporary artists titled ‘Art Against Terrorism- BRAVE HEART’ to commemorate the 41st National Mourning Day.
He said, “Gallery Cosmos is proud of being able to provide a platform for the artists by arranging an exhibition against the terrorist attack that struck on July 1."
Ferdousi Priyabhashini said, "We’ll prevent militancy with what we do."
Turkish Ambassador in Dhaka Devrim Öztürk was also present.
The exhibition is open to all every day from 12 pm to 8 pm till
August 31. l
