Bangladesh Rural Electrifi-cation Board (REB) has made a commitment to provide 30 lakh new electricity connections by FY 2016-17, reports BSS.
"The REB would provide 30 lakh new power connections and construct 35,000 kilometre long electricity distribution line across the country by 2016-2017 Fiscal Year (FY)," Sate Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told the news agency in the capital yesterday.
He said the state run organization has also fixed a target to bring system loss down to 11.50 per cent, adding, "The REB would set up six solar charging stations and install 11,000 prepayment metres by FY 2016-17."
"The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would bring all citizens under power access by 2021 along with making "Digital Bangladesh," Nasrul Hamid said.
Besides, it has targeted to bring 176 upazilas under 100 percent electricity coverage by 2018, as the REB brought 1,56,25,000 consumers under power coverage and provided new connections to 1,59,000 in June 2016.
According to REB information, the Rural Electrifi-cation Board of Bangladesh has been providing service to rural consumers for over 38 years. The REB has been working with its 78 operating rural electric cooperatives called Palli Bidyuit Samity (PBS), which has brought 1,56,25,000 subscribers under its service and more than 3,01,098 kms of line has been constructed.
The power generation capacity is now over 14,500 MW including captive power and currently 76 per cent people are enjoying electricity access.
The information said the REB installed Master Information Centre (MIC) at its headquarters and a software had also been installed in the MIC under the Quality Prepaid Metering project.
