Tax returns filing likely to go online this year

Taxpayers are likely to be able to submit their income tax returns and get their return slips online from the current year, reports UNB.
“The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has completed all its procedures to start the process from the current fiscal year with a high hope to reduce the hassles of taxpayers and thus improve the revenue collection. The taxpayers will be able to pay their taxes from any online bank account," an NBR senior official told the news agency.
Some 649 income tax circle offices across the country under the 31 tax zones have been interconnected with the main server. Strengthening Governance Management Project (SGMP) of the Income Tax wing is implementing the project.
Vietnam-based IT organisation FTP Information System Corporation is implementing the project with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) involving Tk 51 crore.
The basic project work started in 2011, but it could not be implemented due to financial crisis and other complexities. 
On completion of the project, it will remain under the supervision of the FTP Information System Corporation till 2018.
The NBR initiated the online tax payment system first in 2010-11 fiscal for the taxpayers of the Tax Zone-8 as a pilot project where around 17,000 individual taxpayers were enlisted.
"The project has been taken to make the income tax wing complete, self-sufficient, modern, stronger and accountable," the NBR official said.
