Mahmud favours sub-continent spin coach

Sports Reporter

While Bangladesh need a spin coach to replace sacked Ruwan Kalpage as soon as possible, former captain Khaled Mahmud insisted, a sub-continent coach would be better to serve the country’s spinners purpose.

He said, the sub-continent is blessed with many great spinners, which the countries outside sub-continent so far never emulated.  “Only Shane Warne is exceptional, Daniel Vettori is also good, otherwise other countries didn’t produce that much quality spinners what the sub-continent got,” said Mahmud, now a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
“I think the BCB should mull to hire a spin coach from this region because they know the culture and wicket very well. It’s only my opinion. I don’t know what BCB would do,” he opined.
Kalpage was the assistant coach of the team but he also looked after the spin department.
The BCB has recently terminated the contract of Kalpage after he failed to turn up for work by August 16. Media committee chairman Jalal Yunus said Kalpage did not respond to the BCB's latest letter.
Kalpage and other foreign staffs of BCB voiced concerns over their safety in Dhaka after the terror attack in Gulshan’s Holy Artisan Restaurant on July 1. But BCB addressed their concerns by the provision of extra security. While that pleased Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, fielding coach Richard Halsall and strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayan and they have been working here smoothly, Kalpage still remained concerned that BCB deemed unfair.
Kalpage’s absence ahead of the home series against England left BCB to search a new spin coach but Jalal Yunus said they would appoint any local coach for temporary basis should they don’t get any foreign coach in this period.
