Train hits vehicle; 3 traders killed
Three cattle traders were killed as a Dhaka-bound Rangpur Express Intercity Train hit a cow-laden vehicle, locally known as “Votvoti", at Manaspar Kuthirpara point in Rangpur on Saturday night, police said.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kawnia Thana Abdul Kader Zilani over cell phone from the spot told the national news agency, the tragic accident occurred at around 10 pm, killing three persons aboard of the 'Votvoti' and six cows on the spot. Identities of the deceased persons could not be known immediately. "Another unidentified passenger of the 'Votvoti' was critically injured and he was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital," the OC added. Members of Government Railway Police (GRP) from Kawnia GRP Thana immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the bodies.
College girl stabbed by stalker
A college girl was stabbed by a boy in Dakshin Surma upazila of the district on Saturday.
Officer in charge of Dakshin Surma police station Ataur Rahman said a boy named Liton Mian was teasing the girl when she was returning home from Noor Jahan Memorial Women’s College of the upazila. As the girl protested, Liton stabbed her. Local people caught Liton Mian and handed him over to the Dakshin Surma Thana police. Liton is in police custody now, the OC added.
Phensidyl seized from stone-laden truck
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three alleged drug-peddlers with 892 bottles of phensidyl from a stone-laden truck on Rajshahi-Dhaka highway in the district Saturday night, RAB sources said in Rajshahi.
The arrested persons were identified as Sohel Rana, 26, Lal Mahmud, 40, and Nur Ahmed, 18. On a tip-off, a team of the elite force halted the Dhaka-bound truck and seized the phensidyl after searching it at around 11.30 pm. The operation team also seized the truck containing 458 cubic feet of stone, three mobile sets and Taka 9,117 in cash.
A case was recorded with the police station concerned in this connection and the arrested persons along with the seized goods were handed over to police.
2 arrested with drug in Ctg
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-7 seized 895 bottles of phensidyl along with a covered van at city's Akbar Shah areas Saturday morning.
Acting on secret information, a RAB team stopped a covered van and after search the RAB men found 895 bottles of phensidyl and arrested two persons in this connection, RAB source said. Media officer of the RAB, Chandan Devnath said the Phensidyl was being brought to Chittagong from Comilla.
In the preliminary investigation, the elite force found the traders have been involved in peddling contraband drugs for long. The team seized the covered van and cases were filed against the two drug traders with Akbar Shah police station.
Five food shops fined
Members of Department of National Consumer Right Protection (DNCRP) today fined three food shops Tk 15,000 in Rajshahi on charges of selling sub-standard foods.
A DNCRP team conducted raids at Luxmipur area under Rajpara Police Station in the city and found the shops guilty of preparing, possessing and selling foods in unhygienic condition. Executive Magistrate Shantonu Kumar Das led the team. The team fined the shops Taka 15,000 and realized the fined money from the shop owners on the spot. Deputy Director of DNCRP, Mahabubur Rahman said the drive against the violations of consumers' rights will continue.
Birsrestha Matiur's death anniversary observed
Bangladesh Air Force(BAF) on Saturday observed the 45th death anniversary of Flight Lieutenant M Matiur Rahman Birshrestho with due solemnity, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) release
On the occasion, a milad mahfil was held at the central mosques of all BAF Bases after Asr prayers where munajat were also offered seeking divine blessings for the departed soul and peace and prosperity of the country. Officers and members of all ranks of Bangladesh Air Force BAF were present.
