A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced man to seven years imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling gold bars through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport in 2008.
The court of senior special session judge Md Shah Nur handed down the verdict. The court also fined the convict Tk 10, 000, in default to suffer three months more in jail. The convicted is now absconding.
The convict is Mohammad Naium, son of Ali Ahmed, hailing from Fatikchhari Upazila of Chittagong. He was an expatriate of Oman. The convict has remained absconding after getting bail, said the court sources. On March 23, 2008 Mohammad Naium had arrived at the airport from Oman. Searching his luggage, customs officials recovered 15 gold bars from his procession, said advocate Md Fakruddin Chowdhury, Chittagong Metropolitan public prosecutor (PP).
